Ever wondered how clean the air you're breathing is, right now? According to this free app, Pollution, which pulls in real-time air pollution data for 1,380 cities worldwide, air quality at my home in Clovis is ranked as "harmful" by air-quality sensors. Usefully, you can toggle different forms of pollution – air, radiation from mobile phone masts, water and earth – and see the results overlaid on a Google map, based on your location if you let the app locate you by GPS. It's a great resource for a free app – the only irritant is that it serves mobile ads at the bottom of the screen.

This is cool. Now I want an iPhone. It would be extra nice to be able to connect a little portable air quality sensor to assess the actual criteria pollutants wherever one finds him/herself. Such mechanisms currently exist but are small back pack size. There are other monitors the size of a normal wallet but they need to be sent in to get studied in the lab to measure PM levels. Whith the technology we have today though I am sure we are only a couple of years away from having a personal AQ monitor that can get plugged into any computer for data acquisition. THanks for th earticle!
