Green Fresno

Connect. Share. Discuss. Live a sustainable life.

I am SO EXCITED that this site exists! I WANT a Sustainable City! I BELIEVE in a Green Fresnan Future!

My name is Sophie, I grew up in the foothills outside of Fresno (near Millerton Lake). In 2004 I graduated from Sierra High School and went off to UC Santa Cruz where I became thoroughly involved in their Student Environmental Center and the Campus Sustainability Movement. I learned to live and breathe sustainability, and after I graduated this past June (2008) I went on to be hired as the coordinator for UCSC's largest environmental event, the Campus Earth Summit, which is what I'm doing now (http://www.enviroslug.org/earthsummit).

But as wonderful as Santa Cruz has been, it has never felt like home. My true home is up here in the boonies (where I'm visiting). From my mother's house in the hills I can look down on Fresno, and more often than not all I see is a sea of brown-grey smog covering the bustling city. And as I look to the North, the majestic mountains I could see so clearly in my childhood (just 15 years ago) are barely visible in the haze.

My job at UCSC ends in June, and then I want to move back to the community that raised me, and start to make some change. I am so pleased to find this website to make the connections that will need to be made for Fresno to become a healthy and happy place to live. There is SO much potential in this city, I can't wait to see where it goes.

If anyone is interested in the same dream, or knows of progress already being made, please get in contact.

Sophie,
Thank you for your post. I enjoyed reading part of your journey. There is hope for the Central Valley and things are beginning to gain momentum as people start to learn about smarter ways to live that do not only do 'less bad" but actually bless others. It is a slow process as we shift to more sustainable choices, but that is true anywhere. No one has arrived, it is about having a teachable attitude and working together. Feel free to send me a message and we can begin a conversation. I appreciate what you shared.
Tom
