I came across a superb idea in my friend's Yes magazine. There was an article concerning
about local currencies across the country. Various communities issue their own money such as Berk Shares,
Ithaca Hours, Berkeley Bread and Detroit Cheers. Locally there is North Fork Shares which was started
about 2 months ago to help the depressed economy there. The town took a hit when the sawmill closed
in 1994. The major advantage to local money is that money stays in the l

Now the heat is up, the humidity is down and we finally have San Joaquin valley SUMMER with a capital S! The garden is on automatic (sprinklers, drip lines or left to dry out) and the plants are almost all on HEAT STRESS --slower growth and blossoming, but there's some. . .just less usually, and it's okay to let our plants take a short dormancy break in the heat. I think the extra cool weather may be soon paid for in full -- no particular ESP or anything, I just think it's gong to heat up and

One of the tired questions that keeps lingering in the real estate world is... "what is a greened up home worth?". We know that in new construction the value and profitability of green homes is there. We have studies that prove that there are fewer callbacks, higher prices, faster home sales, superior customer satisfaction and reduced energy usage. But this is for new homes. What about the existing housing stock?
Last February I had a chance to present on the valuation of

I was recently on the EWG.org website and looked up the toxins that are in my tap water. I am in Clovis and one of the top toxins which were above the recommended health level and above the legal limit were DBCP and another above the recommended health level was arsenic. When I called and spoke with a women who works Clovis water supply she stated that the DBCP pesticide is filtered but the arsenic is not. When I looked up filters that would eliminate arsenic the only ones that do this are th

Notes and info: Thanks for your additions, Fallon, on worms, vermiculture and such (see below) and I love the ice bottles idea to combat summer heat.
I have watched my worms in very rainy weather -- hate the poor babies to drown! I have my pile in very cool, shady corner with a sandy bottom -- it seems like they've been okay. One thing I add is shredded paper, whether newspaper or household paper, when all I seem to have is green in order to balance my compost pile and keep it

After sifting last year’s compost to use for topping off pots, adding to roses, filling in where needed, I see the compost pile needs some oooomph to get back to balance. First I think I’ll take out the non-performers: I don’t think pineapple tops compost well, but then I wasn’t sure so I threw them in to find out. And avocado seeds, not so easily broken down but left alone some have rooted. Whole fru
