My First Solar Oven Complete!

Thumbnail
Our friend Carl Peters helped me build a solar oven recently.  I've seen it get to 350ºF in the afternoon.  It's a double-walled box made out of plywood.  It's really heavy and bulky, which makes it stable in the wind and very sturdy, but not very portable.  Carl found a few nice pieces of tempered glass about 16x19 for $5 each.  He sold me the glass, cut most of the wood, and held my hand through most of the process to make sure I could finish the project.  Also, my father-in-law happens to be…See More

Earth Day and Arduino

Yeah, the new format for Green Fresno is cool.  Here I am just testing it out.  I'm super stoked about Fresno Earth Day!  Woohoo! Also, I'm just getting started with some electronics projects (e.g. sun tracking circuits) and I have an Arduino I'm playing with.  I'd love to network with some other nerds and trade ideas if anyone is out there.  Something kinda like FOSUG (Fresno Open Source Users Group) but for "…See More

I love the idea, Gene. I've been trying to dream up ways to encourage folks to keep our money local, too. Like developing a rating system for businesses to show how locally beneficial they are, based mostly on whether they spend their money…

Biking Fresno!

My old professor at Cal Poly used to say, "Did you know that in terms of using your energy to get you around, riding a bicycle is about three times as efficient as walking?" Wikipedia agrees.Because Fresno is so flat, and sadly almost entirely paved over, you can get just about anywhere on a bike around here in no time. This is a great place to ride a bike, whether to get where you need to go or to ride just for fun. There's quite a bit of social riding, too. There are fun groups of Punk Riders,…See More

Hi Steve,

Happy to see your wife, children and mom at the Green Hope Veterans picnic last Saturday. Eugene did it again with heart! I appreciate you and your family. Your mom gave a nurses talk about the small changes we can make that create ripple effects- right on-like savings in the bank for the future- Going green and just recycling, and turning off lights and driving less are saving me money- and bike riding gives me a bonus in the bank with less driving and great fun! We had a very nice bike ride as Eugene wore his green cap so everyone could see our group on the trails. I hope to stay connecting with the Green Hope Veterans and all the meaningful work you do!
