The sun is shining, birds are singing, garden is bursting

Now you may want to ask if I went out and planted anything last week and I didn't. I moved some smaller seedlings into larger containers in the greenhouse but with the weather reports looking soggier and soggier--I flinched and . . . didn't plant. I feared everything would get washed out. (I think that would have been true.)  I was afraid too many things would have gotten waterlogged, moldy, mildewed and definitely been cold, perhaps too cold and hail damaged to boot. No growth, at the very…See More

Goodie goodie! Gardening Time!

Weather pretty cool, turning over the soil and night is warming. So is it time to plant? Yes. Maybe, No? what are you planting and how much can you afford to lose and do over? Are your plants really hardy and ready to go? or could they stand a little more growth? Can you sow some seed now and wait a couple of weeks?I always want to go NOW. And I really need to prepare the soil better. I need to move slower, do my best to gauge night temperatures better, dig in that compost. And one thing I do…See More

Rain Rain come and Play! Snow snow Pile up Today!

Unlike some, I do know we always need rain. we live in a DESERT. Silly People! And rain = SNOW PACK. No rain = NO SNOW PACK. Which means no water which means less water which spells D R O U G H T. Ugly reality of our lovely central valley.Bad bad bad word if you are a gardener. I can use less water, I can be water wise , I can use drips and propate mostly drought resistant plants. But in the end of the day i do need some water. My veggies need water. My roses need water. My household needs…See More

I see new life

I can't help it--the very smallest peek of a new bud on the maples, the tip of leaf from a bulb or a seed opening to the light and I am excited all over again. Whew! We made it. (Not that I ever doubted it.) There's something in the darkness, the bone cold fog, however brief it is here in Central California, that chills my soul. And I am out in the first sun looking for evidence of light and life and renewal again. Again. Again. I am not sure if it was my mother who I know hated winter's…See More

Make recycling a habitat

Hopefully many of you know of the Habitat for Humanity store on Clovis (actually Railroad) north of Shaw behind Lowes?????Here's a great source for odds and ends to start or finish that project, from tile to doors to lights to funny little TVs for a spare room.NOW a new book from Timber Press by Matthew Levesque "Revolutionary Yardscape" has really delightful ideas on using recylced materials for that unusual yard art, accent piece or pathway. He works in a similiar recycling store in the…See More

Now it's SUMMER

Now the heat is up, the humidity is down and we finally have San Joaquin valley SUMMER with a capital S! The garden is on automatic (sprinklers, drip lines or left to dry out) and the plants are almost all on HEAT STRESS --slower growth and blossoming, but there's some. . .just less usually, and it's okay to let our plants take a short dormancy break in the heat. I think the extra cool weather may be soon paid for in full -- no particular ESP or anything, I just think it's gong to heat up and…See More

Summer time and the living is easy

Easy enough for the worms and bugs and bacteria and oh god, who knows what lurks in the dark lagoon? I think it is perfect composting weather, not toooo hot or tooooo cold, maybe just right. I am admittedly a Goldilocks kind of person --I measure the light, not too bright, not too dark. The humidity? Not too damp, not too dry. The heat? Not too hot, not unbearable. I move through major decisions searching for a happy medium. Knowing full well that involves compromise, I try to get what is…See More

I have soaked office paper shreds in order to use it for making recycled paper--I wonder if that would be a good addition? because the soaking is enough (1-2 days) to break down the fibers before we puree it in a blender for paper. Anyone have a…

I have a hard time coming up with enough brown stuff. I don't get a newspaper. I tried shredded office paper and junk mailers but it clumps and doesn't break down well. My trees aren't big enough yet to provide a lot of dry leaves. So…

Mananging the compost/composting the management

Notes and info: Thanks for your additions, Fallon, on worms, vermiculture and such (see below) and I love the ice bottles idea to combat summer heat.I have watched my worms in very rainy weather -- hate the poor babies to drown! I have my pile in very cool, shady corner with a sandy bottom -- it seems like they've been okay. One thing I add is shredded paper, whether newspaper or household paper, when all I seem to have is green in order to balance my compost pile and keep it healthy. Then…See More

Hi Renel, The temperature in Fresno is a concern but its not as big of a problem as you might think. We usually take frozen bottles of water and put them in the top of the worm bin system on days when its really hot. If you use a 2 liter bottle…

Thanks Fallon~ I am very interested in a workshop. I have an interest in vermiculture mostly because our yard is REALLY small. We are vegetarian and I hate just throwing all those scraps away. My concern is the temperature in Fresno. Even if we kept…
