Chile Fest report and July meeting.

Solar Cooking at Fresno Chile Fest 2011

The Central Valley Solar Cookers  participated in a solar cooking contest and had solar cooking demonstrations at the first Fresno Chile Fest June 18,2011.  It was exciting to see all the different foods that were prepared using the suns energy in the solar cooking contest.  First place went to Shyamoli, Dominique and Simone representing Shyamoli"s Indian Kitchen, Fresno.  They prepared a wonderful rice and vegetable dish with Indian style spices.  Second place went to Liscia Digiacomo, San Diego, who prepared an amazing rum raisin banana bread. Tere Yamamoto, Sanger, took third with her delicious lentil chili.  Also of note were the students of Manchester Gate who grilled quesadillas on a solar grill and answered lots of questions from the public about solar cooking.
Central Valley Solar Cookers will be having our next meeting Sunday,  July 17th from 1-3:30 pm at San Gabriel Park, Clovis.  We will be featuring cooking local treasures from our back yards and Fresno State's Fresh Corn.  Anyone interested in solar cooking is invited.  For more information contact Carl Peters at Solar.man.peters@gmail.com .  Central Valley Solar Cookers meets monthly from April to October.  Meetings are informal with lots of cooking demonstrations and often tasting too.

Solar Cooking Contest

Plans are firming up for solar cooking at the first Fresno Chile Festival on June 18 which is also Solar Day 2011.  Here is a link to their web page.
http://www.downtownfresno.org/chile-festival

We need to be there about 10 am so we can drive in and set up before the event starts at 11 am.  From hwy 41 take the Tulare st exit and head sw, cross the Fulton Mall and turn right on H street and then right again on Mariposa way.  Enter the mall and turn right towards an ally/firelane.  There will be the clock tower and the stage over to the left and the EOC building to your right. we are setting up near the EOC building so stop and unload your supplies.  Then proceed down the ally and turn right on Tulare and right into the parking garage.  Hopefully we will get parking comp'ed; if not it's $3 for the day here.

The Solar Cooking Contest  is $5 to enter; registration with John Martin that day..   You can cook what ever you want.  Judging will be about 4pm, but if you finish early let Carl know as they will be flexible.  Awards will be about 4:30 pm.

First Prize $100 cash
Second Prize $20 gift certificates from Cafe Corazon and Dusty Buns.
Third Prize $20 gift certificate from Fresno Ag.

If you don't want to compete you can do a cooking demonstration or just come help and lend support.  We will be signing up new members that day too.
Be sure to bring chairs and we could use a couple more tables (let us know if you can bring one) also a couple umbrella's or shade structures might be nice.

Solar Cooking Activities

Central Valley Solar Cookers had a fun meeting last Sunday at the
SJ River Parkway's Riverview Ranch.  Even though the sun played peak a
boo all afternoon we were able to cook chicken, cobblers, short cake,
shrimp and a nice assortment of vegetables.  Members also brought
stuff cooked ahead of time and a lot of nice snacking foods from home.
New member John Martin demonstrated some new cooking techniques using
canning jars painted black.  His band Cerronegro provided music, which
was a very enjoyable special treat.
June 18th is the Fresno Chile Fest 2011, this is also the date
for Solar Day 2011.  We have been asked to get as many people there
solar cooking as possible; either in the cooking contest or just
demonstrating different cooking techniques.  If you are not cooking
yet come support us and maybe learn something new.  We also will need
help with a membership drive that day if you can volunteer.

I had a great time today meeting you all.   You have inspired me to get an oven built and start cooking.   Thanks Carl and John for so much of your time.  See you at Fresno Chili Festival.   Bigger is better for home and the glass canning jars seem to be a really great way to cook.  The black paint absorbing heat and also pressure cooking.
