Green Fresno

Connect. Share. Discuss. Live a sustainable life.

it is a free site to post any extra veggies, fruits, nuts, or tools. either for trade or sale. it is a great idea, but there has been little to no activity in the Fresno area.

i agree checked out the site and it's pretty neat
You might want to see what you can also do with more established sites like the Fresno/Clovis FreeCycle and Yard sale sites to get some buzz going for yours.
I love this idea, it kind of reminds me of the movie, "The Power of Community - How Cuba Survived Peak Oil". A really inspiring movie.
Thought of another way to tie into existing networks... The meet-up and yahoo vegetarian, cooking, wine tasting groups in Fresno & Clovis... I'm sure they would have an interest... I'm guessing there has already been an attempt to connect with the gardening groups...
I went to the site and signed up.. I noticed there is no invitation process to invite friends or to post on social network pages... could be why it's not spreading like wildfire! Also did a search and nothing was listed within 50 miles of my zip... another reason it probably isn't catching on fire. I know that with the established sites like FreeCycle, that there is a list of rules that are required and also an area that people can post habitual no shows, so there are quite a few things the site needs in order for people to begin to feel safe to share and trade.
What if we create a grassroots group here in GreenFresno just to see if there's enough interest in the community. Then I'll help with marketing the group so people could sign up. Care to create the workflow or logistics?

well, for that to work, it might be a good idea to make greenfresno a bit bigger with a membership drive. I don't know if we have tapped the co-housing project over on north Fresno. I will be working with some of the residence to create a sustainable garden there.
there is also plans in the works to create a "homeless garden" (looking for a better name) land is to be donated and a garden is to be set up for growing of food to feed the homeless.
I would like to get involved with the higher ups of this site to perhaps get some cross organization help. I work for the student ran organic farm at Fresno State.
It would be nice to have a Local site set up for trading, seeing as how most of the traffic on veggietrader is nowhere near here.
Rachael, if you have not done so already, please feel free to invite your friends to Green Fresno on the 'invite' link in the upper right menu. We are working to build membership and participation so that more people can benefit from this type of information.

Tom,

I've tried to use the invitation with my address books in AOL, but it keeps telling me there are no addresses in my address book. I have a huge list of media contacts in my address book, so I do know there are addresses in there.

Tom,

At every meeting I go to I tell everyone about GreenFresno and what a bang up job you've done in building the website. I would love for you to attend some of the meetings if you are able to. Specifically the Building Healthy Neighborhoods and Community Garden Steering Committee meetings. One of the latest projects the Steering Committee is working on is to map the current community gardens. I took a workshop on using Google's GPS mapping capabilities to map locations for Community Projects... I think the community gardens would be a great way to put into practice what I learned. It would also make it the information available to anyone who Googled it.

I love how this site's format is interactive and so "alive" with information. Richard from Metro said they could add a page for community garden information to Metro's site, but I think, with all the changes, GreenFresno would be a much better forum allowing anyone to add information on their garden, instead of needing to submit the information and then waiting for a webmater to update

Any chance you can "tap" into Google's GPS capabilities from GreenFresno? Just curious!

This sounds like a great idea.
Hi there! I've been following your thread with interest, and I wanted to suggest another service. It's called Neighborhood Fruit (neighborhoodfruit.com). They have over 10,000 fruit trees (and veggies and herbs) registered across the US, which can be viewed on a standard google map.

I've tried both services, and I find the Neighborhood Fruit one easier to use, because of the maps and the easier interface.
