Event Description

Hello All!

Well... due to some red tape issues,
the market at the old Fresno Ag won't be opening on the 20th after all.
It is now slated to open on January 26th.
The Market will be open on Thursdays and Fridays from 10:00 am to dusk.
"My lil chick-a-dee" will be there on Thursdays and Fridays.

There is a very good chance the prototype of the chicken wheel burrow and "chicken kits" will debut at this farmer's market. The most exciting part of this is that there will be hand raised pullets (Young Female Chickens, not Hens yet.. not laying yet) for sale in the area which used to be the garden center. I asked Denise Fugate, the owner of "My lil chick-a-dee" what breeds and ages she will have on the 26th and this is her response:

On the 26th I plan to have:  Ameraucana, Red Sexton, White Leghorn, Cochins of different colors, both banties and standards. I will probably add Rhode Island Reds and Barred Rock. Depends on how well their feathers have grown in after their first molt.

The first part of March: Black Australorp and Rose Comb Brown leghorn

In mid-March: japanese, black rosecomb, blue silkie, golden sebright, mille fleur, porcelain, quail antwerp belgian, silver penciled rock, silver sebright and sultan bantams, and standard buff minorcas, columbian wyandotte, crevecoeurs, partridge rock, silver laced wyandotte, white faced black spanish, and white wyandottes.
End of March: black australorp, silver cuckoo marans, dark brahmas, golden polish, white langshans, blue andalusians, white crested black polish, buff laced polish, buff rock, golden campines, silver polish, white orpington, and white plymouth rocks.
It takes at least 6 wks to grow them to the size they can be outdoors.

I have ordered eggs of Black Red Laced Wyandotte, Lavender Orpington, Black and Blue Copper Marans, Light Sussex and Rumpless Araucana.  I ordered chicks of black copper, wheaten, blue and gold cuckoo marans plus lavender orpingtons from another company which should ship sometime in March, so should have those available in late April or early May.
***********
While those of you who live in the city can window shop for pullets, the county island and Madera Ranchos folks can certainly start purchasing pullets and reserving the breeds as they come available. Denise has chosen a nice variety of heritage breeds that cover the range of colored eggs available pink, blue, green, brown, cinnamon brown and of course white.

The timing for purchasing pullets is excellent. If you wait until spring and purchase chicks, it can take 8 months before they will be ready to lay eggs, putting you into the fall, when the weather changes, when chickens tend to molt their feathers and stop laying as many eggs, before they begin to pick up speed in the spring. The pullets being offered are old enough to be outside, so you can also avoid the dust and constant attention that raising chicks inside cause and require.

Denise has held, loved and cuddled these little girls, so they are tame and love people... most definitely pet quality. Denise has also chosen the best breeds for eggs of all colors for our local Fresno weather! Please do stop by and check out the little girls, even if you aren't ready to buy your chickens yet... It never hurts to do a little window shopping and researching while we are waiting for the ordinance change. Hope to see you all there!
