Event Description

Mission Statement
“The Building Healthy Neighborhoods Task Force works collaboratively to move our community toward physical activity friendly neighborhoods.”

What is the Built Environment and Health?
The designated use, layout, and design of a community’s physical structures - including its housing, businesses, transportation systems, and recreational resources - affect patterns of living that influence health.

Successes
• Building Healthy Neighborhoods in Fresno County Summit on November 18, 2005
• Opportunity to contribute to the County’s General Plan revisions:
• Draft language for Health and Safety Section
• Participate in plan review meetings
• Put Public Health at the planning table
• Building Healthy Neighborhoods Reception, Presentation, Walk Survey on April 27, 2006
• Co-sponsored Bike to Work Week with the local Bike Coalition, May 13-19, 2006
• National Hmong American Farmers donation for irrigation system, February 20, 2007
• With funding support from the Building Healthy Neighborhoods Task Force (BHN) and Kaiser Permanente, the Burroughs Neighborhood Committee hosted a workshop in October 2007 where several priority projects, including the bus stop shelter, were identified during a walk survey.
• A new bus stop shelter was built at the corner of Tulare and Sierra Vista Avenues near Burroughs Elementary School on Tuesday, February 5, 2008.
