SUMMARY:Basics of Photovoltaic (PV) Systems
DESCRIPTION:Basics of Photovoltaic (PV) Systems for Grid-Tied Applicat
ions\n\nOur objective in this course is to provide the basic vocabular
y, technical, and economic details necessary to understand and evaluat
 e grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) projects from a project manager's a
nd/or owner's perspective. In this introductory course, Pete Shoemaker
, Renewables Program Coordinator for the Pacific Energy Center, will p
rovide an overview of the fundamentals of solar electric systems, tech
nically known as photovoltaics. He will discuss the advantages and dis
advantages of various PV technologies (monocrystalline, polycrystallin
e, and thin-film), including module efficiencies and their implication
s on the space requirements of a project.\n\nPete will provide an over
view of criteria for selecting a solar site, PV installation options,
and PV system costs and incentives (state and federal). Through projec
t examples, he will present PV installation options for residential an
d nonresidential projects for systems ranging in size from less than 3
0 kilowatts (kW) to over 1 megawatt (MW), including roof mounted, grou
nd mounted, building integrated, and PV as public art.\n\nPlease note
this class is designed as an introductory class for anyone interested
in understanding the basic concepts of PV project evaluation. It is no
 t a hands-on installation class or a PV design/engineering class.\nAud

aker is the Renewables Program Coordinator at the PG&E Pacific Energy
Center. He teaches a variety of courses for the PEC, including the Bas
ics of Photovoltaic (PV) courses for both residential and commercial a
pplications and PV Site Analysis and System Sizing.\n\nPete has been a
ctive in the PV industry for many years, most recently as head of the
PV division of Poco Solar Energy, Inc., of Santa Clara. He has extensi
ve experience in sales and system design for both residential and comm
ercial PV customers and expertise in the administrative details of the
new California Solar Initiative (CSI). Pete has worked as a PV consul
tant for green building projects in the City of Pacifica, assisting in
design, permitting, and environmental impact reports.\n\nPete's educa
tional background includes workshop and classroom teaching and curricu
lum design, including ten years as a lead educational software designe
r for The Learning Company. He has a B.A. from Stanford University.\n\
